Trying to re-direct a child's interest from a screen and toward outdoor activities can be a challenge but taking the time to build their love for fishing will result in a lifetime of outdoor fun and excitement.
Following are a few quick tips to help grow a child's interest and desire to spend more time near the water and less in front of a screen!
Remember to make it a fun experience for the child, and to be patient always encouraging them throughout the day at the pond. If the fishing is slow there's nothing wrong with skipping a few stones or trying to catch a frog or two. The more ways they have fun while out on a fishng adventure will only build their desire to be outside and not with their face buried in a screen!Show them how to properly handle a fishing rod and reel, including rig a lure or bait the hook; how to cast the line safely; hook a fish and ultimately reel in a fish.Take the child to a body of water where bass and other easily caught fish like panfish are known to live; let them practice casting and retrieving the bait with the hope of at least getting a few "line tugs" while practicing.Help them to identify the signs of a bite, such as the rod tip twitching, float bobbing or the line moving. After learning how to detect a bite, help them learn how to set the hook and reel the fish back in.Once they have caught a fish, show them how to properly release it back into the water.Lastly, teach them about fishing good manners such as leaving the area clean and basic regulations, such as catch limits and size restrictions.
