How Wind and Wave Action Impacts Fishing

Wind and waves can significantly impact bass fishing, particularly around cover.

Here's how to use these elements to your advantage:

Wind-Driven Currents:

  • Baitfish Concentration: Wind creates currents that push baitfish towards cover. Bass will position themselves near these areas to ambush unsuspecting prey.
  • Prime Fishing Spots: Focus on points, drop-offs, and other structures that break the current. These areas create eddies and turbulence, where bass can rest and wait for an easy meal.

Wave Action and Visibility:

  • Reduced Visibility: Waves can reduce visibility, making it harder for bass to spot your lure. This can be beneficial for stealthier presentations like soft plastics or jigs.
  • Increased Activity: Waves can also stimulate bass, making them more likely to chase down a moving target. This is a great time to use aggressive lures like crankbaits or spinnerbaits.

Though many times wind and waves can have a positive effect on fishing, there are times when they have the opposite impact as highlighted in the following video:

By understanding how wind and wave action affect bass behavior, you can make more informed decisions on the water and increase your chances of catching more fish.
