Pond Fishing Tips

Though most anglers have access to large lakes or reservoirs, there are definitely times when smaller bodies of water provide some of the best bass fishing opportunities around.

One distinct advantage of fishing smaller ponds is usually being able to access several places along the shoreline.

Being able to change your fishing location means you can present your baits to different fish and target different types of cover.

Both are key factors in catching more and sometimes bigger bass! Following is an info-graphic prepared by the folks at Fix.com discussing many of the factors you should consider before your next trip down to your local pond for a little afternoon fishing adventure!

Start Them Young

It's was a Thursday in early January when I came across this fantastic infographic from the folds at Fix.com and decided it would be a perfect addition to the site, especially since it's #ThrowbackThursday! :)

It also brought back instant memories to my early childhood when my dad first introduced me to fishing and let's just say I was not just bitten by the fishing bug but virtually consumed (in a good way) by it :D

Though dad's fishing interest were mainly aimed at fishing off the coast of southeastern Massachusetts for striped bass and bluefish, I was drawn to the "sweet-water" side, hitting the ponds and streams around our home whenever I could get there...

Reading the post and infographic on the Fix.com site also reminded me of some of the possible pitfalls like the many days out with dad chasing stripers and nothing to show for it and how many kids would get bored with the whole fishing thing. Fortunately the information provided lays out the perfect game-plan to avoid potential tragedy by focusing on baits and fish that are eager to bite. Definitely a ploy I use whenever I took my girls out in the past and grandsons in the present.

Check out all the info on the infographic and see what I mean!

Enjoy :D

So a few tips to get and keep the the young ones "hooked on fishing"...
  • Keep it simple and keep them involved even helping them learn to cast;
  • Keep the fish on the line so the kids stay interested; &
  • Most of all, make it a fun experience that they will never forget!
Tight lines!

Fishing Frogs for Spring Bass

Springtime is prime bassin’ time!

Combining winter-thinned, hungry bass with the internal drive to prepare to reproduce means plenty of fish are ready to strike all kinds of bait!

Once the water warms to the mid to upper 50s, bass are also eager to inhale lures presented on the surface over favorite ambush points…

So not only is springtime primo bass time’; it’s topwater time!

And nothing is more exciting than seeing a big ole bucket-mouth crush a hollow-body frog on top :)

Take a few moments to watch the following video and see what I mean  :)

Even though the presenter discusses a specific brand for the frogs he was using, the tips apply to similar models produced by other companies as well!

Difference Between Structure and Cover

Even the pros screw these terms up from time to time…

Definitely two of the misused terms in all of fishing and in most cases the difference between structure and cover is pretty straight-forward!

Here’s a great video that should drive the point home once and for all ;)

Sometimes the devil is in the details and keeping the terms straight makes it easier for everyone to understand what's veing fished...

Do you agree?

Keeping Fish Alive When Live-Well Fails

It was great to hear a live testimonial at the  2014 FLW Lake Okeechobee Event (2/7-10) for the New Pro Products, V-T2 Live-well Ventilation system…

After weighing his day’s bag, Castrol Pro, Philip Jarabeck from Virginia announced he had his live-well pumps quit on the previous day but he never lost a fish from his limit bag crediting New Pro’s V-T2 system!

When installed, the V-T2 system provides a passive vent that cools and re-oxygenates the water when the boat is moving from spot to spot as described in the following video…

Check out the New Pro Products site for more information and videos describing the system and installation instructions by clicking the following link…
