I love fishing plastic baits weightless when working many types of shallow cover. It all started many years ago when I used 6″ Boone worms to fish weed-beds, docks, over-hangs and other shallow bass havens.
When Boone stopped producing the worms, my use of weightless plastics slowed or at least it did until Yamamoto Custom Baits created the Senko.
As much as I love fishing the Senko and other knock-offs in shallow cover fishing situations there is always a desire to have greater variety to offer our finny friends, especially the finicky ones.
I have tried other salt-laden or dense baits…
Some with success; others not so much but one style of plastics always seemed an issue when trying to go weightless… tube baits.
Today I came across a video (embedded below) demonstrating a weightless set-up of a heavy, salted tube bait manufactured by Kietech, the 4.5″ Salty Core Tube…
Based on info from another Keitech rep, the salty core tube weighs about a 1/2 ounce (cool) and can be rigged either normally or backwards for different presentations…
This sounds like a fantastic skipping bait!
Though they don’t specify the details on rigging the bait, I assume at least a 4/0 or 5/0, EWG hook is needed to avoid balling the plastic over the hook point…
After checking out the tubes at Tackle Warehouse, one potential draw-back is the cost…
Each package of Keitech’s Salty Core Tube is almost 7 bucks and only contains 6 tubes…
I have to wonder how durable they are and if they will stand up like the original Gitzits (they were very durable!)
Given the cost, seems like a bait to use sparingly in specific situations…
None the less,time to purchase a couple of packs & test them out to see just how effective they are up in the shallows…
