In today’s fast-paced world where articles and videos are popping up everywhere, it’s easy to fall prey to information overload. There are times most of us would much prefer to get some friendly advice in the form of a short tip rather than a several hundred word article!
So here are the first of a series of quick bass tips to help lessen burden of the information avalanche surrounding us…
- Never be afraid to throw a buzzbait anytime from spring through fall… even in the middle of the day!
- A buzzbait can be as effective over cover in 15+ feet of water as it is around exposed cover in three feet…
- Never be afraid to throw a frog anytime from spring through fall… even in the middle of the day!
- Working a smokey joe Cordell Big-O through a school of shad or alewife fry can pay-off with bass catching dividends this time of yr!
- Remember… sometimes it’s necessary to “match the hatch” when fishing schooling bass!
- When trying to match the color of schooling baitfish, get out the permanent markers and add a little color to your hard baits!
- Five favorite baits for schooling bass: lipless crank, squarebill, tube, soft stick bait & compact spinner
- Five favorite baits for night fishing: dark spinnerbaits, dark buzzbaits, black jitterbug, dark prop bait, dark vibe jig
- Do you need flat calm conditions to fish a buzzbait? … Nope! … They also work great with a little chop on the water!
- Consider using a bright spinnerbait with painted blades when fishing clear water smallmouth lakes when looking for big smallies!
- Try slow rolling a single-blade spinnerbait when faced with cold water conditions, night fishing or sluggish bass…
- Replace the skirt on your spinnerbait with either a large grub, swimbait or spider grub to give your lure a unique appearance & vibration
- Always try to “bump” ” the cover when fishing reaction baits like spinnerbaits, crankbaits and bladed swim jigs
- Green slime mucking up the bait on your Carolina rig? Try switching over to a drop shot rig & get your bait above the pond scum!
- Check your hooks regularly & sharpen or replace as needed!
- Looking for schooling bass? Remember this… Wind moves algae, baitfish move to feed on algae, bass follow baitfish!
- When fishing for spooky, shallow water bass on sunny days, fish facing the Sun to avoid casting a shadow that cause fish to flee
- Worried about multiple hooks on an A-Rig foul hooking your catch or even you? Replace baits on outer arms with teaser rigs…
- Short on keepers for your trailer hooks? Take a wide rubber band and use a hole punch to make your own…
- Use natural colored plastics (green pumpkin) in clear water; dark colors (black) in dirty water & red hues (red shad) in tea colored water…
- When fishing from shore after the spawn, chose an area with good “castable” cover and deep water access nearby…
- Use a lipless crankbait to fish through, around and under pods of baitfish being attacked by bass. Bigger bass are often under the pod
- If marking fish close to the bottom on your sonar, try shortening your drop shot leader length for more hook-ups…
- Try shaking a 6″ natural tone worm, rigged Texas-style with 3/16 oz bullet sinker & 6 lb. fluorocarbon for tough, clear water bass…
- If your normal swim jig retrieve isn’t getting bit, try adding a pulsating action by continually snapping the rod tip while reeling…
- Chatterbait versus spinnerbait? Use a chatterbait when fishing dirty water for vibration & spinnerbait in clear water for maximum flash…
