Slow Rolling Spinnerbaits For Big Bass

Even with "Old Man Winter" threatening to apply his icy grip, there's time to break out the bass fishing gear and hit your favorite big bass haunts!

How can you catch some of the biggest bass of the year?

A great technique to help catch more of the hawgs migrating from to and from their winter-time, deep-water havens, is to slow roll a spinnerbait right across their nose...

Once the late fall to early spring Sun sends water temps toward the mid-forties, sluggish bass begin their ascension down and up the points and drop-offs to stage for their seasonal migrations.

Slow Rolling Spinnerbaits for Inactive Bass

Spinnerbaits can be one of the most versatile fishing lures in your tacklebox...

You can...
  • Use them as a search bait on long casts using a medium to fast retrieve...
  • Burn them with the blades periodically breaking the surface for schooling bass...
  • Pitch them into cover using any retrieve appropriate for conditions...
  • Use a yo-yo retrieve for suspending fish... and even
  • Slow roll the bait working it along the bottom for lethargic or bass rooting the depths for a meal...
Though slow rolling is usually thought of as a winter or early spring presentation, truth is it can be effective whenever the fish are relating to bottom cover and structure...

In the following video, Bassmaster Elite Pro, Casey Ashley talks about his favorite approach to slow rolling spinnerbaits using a modified tandem blade bait;

One that is a tad different than mine since I typically use a single Colorado or Mag Willow for my slow roll lures...

Just something to think about :)

In the following video, river smallmouth expert Jeff Little describes his approach to using this technique to lure thawing river-bound smallies…

Did spring just arrive?

Maybe it's time to break out the spinnerbaits for those early season, lethargic bass? ;)

Slow Rolling During Pre-Spawn

Cool water and pre-spawn conditions call for one retrieve when fishing a spinnerbait… slow rolling!

In this video, FLW Pro Terry Bolton details his thoughts on the gear and approach to making this presentation work when water temperatures are < 50 degrees F!

Did the ice just go out?

Perhaps it's time to break out those spinnerbaits for a little pre-spawn bassin' fun? :D
